There is a version of Pula that everyone knows. It is the city of the impressive Roman Amphitheatre, a place that wears its two-thousand-year-old history like a crown. It is magnificent, essential. But then there is another Pula. It is a secret whispered on the sea breeze, an experience that begins just a stone’s throw from the city’s hum. This other world is the Verudela peninsula, a place of sun-drenched coves and cool, pine-scented shade.
Your personal story there begins at Villa Magnolia. Think of the villa not just as a place to stay, but as your compass and your sanctuary. It is the elegant, tranquil starting point from which the peninsula unfolds before you each morning. From here, Verudela is not simply a destination on a map; it becomes your own private park, waiting to be explored.
History and Setting
Verudela has long been valued for its location. The Austro-Hungarian Empire built fortresses here when Pula became their main naval base. Fort Bourguignon near Golden Cliffs (Zlatne Stijene), overlooking the coastline, is one of the best examples. At the far end of the peninsula, the Fort Verudela has been converted into Pula’s Aquarium.
Smaller details add atmosphere. A modest church façade overlooks the Adriatic from the west, particularly striking at sunset when the stone glows. On clear evenings dolphins are sometimes seen offshore. In Verudela history and leisure overlap, giving the peninsula depth beyond its beaches.
Reaching the Peninsula from Villa Magnolia
From Villa Magnolia, it is about three kilometres walk to the lighthouse at the tip of Verudela. Walking is straightforward: the road slopes slightly downhill towards the coast, and gently uphill at Punta Verudela, starting near the roundabout at the bottom of the hill where Fort Bourguignon stands. If you turn right at the roundabout, you will come to Golden Cliffs from where you can take a coastal path towards Punta Verudela. Dividing the day with swimming stops makes it manageable.
Cycling is another good option. Regular bicycles manage the slopes, while electric bikes, available for rent nearby at Zlatne Stijene,
make it even easier. Electric scooters can also be rented across Pula via apps. If you prefer the regular scooters (small motorbikes), that is avaliable as well (a convenient petrol station is 5 min walk from Villa Magnolia). Driving is possible with free parking, but spaces fill quickly and
shaded areas are limited. For flexibility, walking or cycling is usually the best choice. You can also use the local bus - walk to the green market (5-7min walk from the Villa Magnolia) - Bus stop Tomassinijeva, and take the bus 2A or towards Verudela, and 3A on return.
The Beaches of Verudela
The coast here is made up of small, distinct beaches rather than long sandy stretches. Each one has a different character:
- Ambrela Beach: Easy to access and family friendly with showers, cabins and a bar. It has a pebbled entry but can become crowded. Nearby, between parking and the beach, is also a sculpture park.
- Brioni Beach: Below the Grand Hotel Brioni, with concrete steps into the sea. Practical and convenient, especially if you love sunbathing, with a bar at hand.
- Hawaiian Beach: Small, pebbly and backed by rocks. Often has waves due to its exposed location. It doesn't resemble Hawaii. in any way.
- Bonaca Beach: Accessed via a steeper descent near Bonaca restaurant. Quieter, with deeper water.
- Lighthouse Beach: At the far tip, rocky with wide sea views. Clifton restaurant nearby. A dog-friendly beach with a pier lies next door.
- Nudist Coves: Hidden rocky spots near Ambrela and the lighthouse, used informally by naturists.
- Histria Beach: A lively cove near Hotel Histria with an aquapark, massage stands and volleyball.
- Dog Beaches: there are two beaches where you can swim with your furry friends, one on the eastern side, near Lighthouse beach, and the other a bit further from Saccrogiana beach.
Dog beach at Saccrogiana cove
Between the main beaches, rocky ledges and small coves offer more privacy. Here beach shoes are useful because the rocks that are washed by sea are rugged, and you might come across a few sea urchins (point to consider - they thrive in clean water). Always choose an area with safe entry and exit,
since climbing out can be tricky in waves. A snorkelling mask and flippers make swimming easier and more interesting among the rocks. If the sea is choppy on the day or waves are high, take a walk to the other side of the peninsula and you will find that sea is usually quieter there.
Pine Forests and Coastal Paths
One of Verudela’s strengths is its natural covering of pine trees. Much of the peninsula is shaded throughout the day, which makes walking here pleasant even when the sun is high. Pathways allow visitors to circle the entire area and always within sight of the blue water between the trees.
At the western side near Park Plaza Arena Hotel, a steep path leads to a small canyon that opens to the sea. Here it is possible to swim between rocky cliffs at the base. This is more suited to confident swimmers, demonstrating the dramatic variety in the local coastline.
Golden CLIFFS and Fort Bourguignon
West of the peninsula lie Golden Cliffs (Zlatne Stijene). Flat concrete shelves and rock formations lead into the sea, popular for sunbathing and diving. Zeppelin Beach lounge bar is nearby for refreshments.
Rising overhead is Fort Bourguignon, solid and imposing fortress, built to defend Pula during the Austro-Hungarian era. Alongside it stands the Pyramid of Pula. Once a nightclub, today it is an empty landmark, easily visible even from Villa Magnolia. The variety of historical and cultural layers in such a short stretch of coast is striking.
Marina Veruda
On the eastern side of Verudela lies Marina Veruda, a sheltered bay filled with yachts and excursion boats. From here trips head to Cape Kamenjak, famous for its natural beauty and cliff-lined coves. Glass-bottom vessels allow a look beneath the surface, while private boats are available for hire.
Diving schools also operate from the marina, providing easy access to underwater cliffs and sea life. For those who prefer to stay on land, Café Bar Bunarina sits on the pier, offering fresh fish and traditional dishes alongside moored yachts. A bit further down is a resort and restaurant Ribarska Konoba (Fisherman's Hut). Near Marina is a large resort with Hotel Histria, with souvneir shops, restaurants and ATM, as well as the sports grounds (tennis, football, etc.) and night life in various locations.
When the day is over
As the day winds down, Verudela gets ready for the evening. The walk or cycle back to Villa Magnolia provides a change of mood. Leaving behind the lively peninsula, the villa’s tranquil environment offers quiet space to reflect on the day.
The balance here is distinct. By day Verudela provides facilities and activity, yet it is the pine shade, rocky inlets and glimpses of its military past that make the area memorable. By night, calm returns at Villa Magnolia, with enough distance from the resort hotels to feel restful.
Conclusion
Punta Verudela offers more than first impressions suggest. Rather than endless sandy stretches, it provides variety in smaller scale. Each beach has its character, pine shade ensures comfort, and throughout the peninsula history and nature meet.
For those who prefer to explore under their own rhythm, Verudela is ideal. From Villa Magnolia, everything lies within easy reach. Walk, cycle, or hop on a bus, then return to a quiet terrace looking back on a coastline where understated details become lasting memories.
