72 PFF – How to Best Enjoy Screenings in the Arena

We have been visiting the Pula Film Festival for many years, and it remains one of our favourite summer events in town. Based on our own experience, we are sharing a few simple tips to help you stay comfortable and enjoy the screenings from start to finish.

This year, the festival celebrates its 72nd anniversary, making it one of the oldest film festivals in Europe. During this time, Pula comes alive with energy. The town is buzzing with locals, visitors, film lovers, and curious travellers. The atmosphere is special and full of anticipation.

Whether this is your first visit or you're returning to experience it again, this guide will help you make the most of a unique and unforgettable night in the Arena.

Getting There

WALKING

If you're staying at Villa Magnolia, you can walk to the Arena in 30-35 minutes (2.2-2.4km). It’s an easy and pleasant walk. You can stop for dinner or drinks in town on the way. Driving is not ideal during the festival. The town is crowded, parking is paid, and it's often hard to find a spot near the Arena in the evening.

BUS

If you are using local buses, turn right when you exit the garden, walk to the end of the street, and the bus stop will be on your right, next to the café on the corner.

Buses 2A and 3A stop near the Arena (about 6 or 7 stops). Bus 4 also comes close but takes a longer route.

You can buy a single ticket (Zone 1) from the driver for 2 €, or in advance (from kiosks or online) for 0.90 € to 1.50 €. A daily ticket costs 4 €.

Night buses 71 and 72 run from 11:00 p.m. onwards. On the day of your screening, your festival ticket also serves as a free city bus pass between 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.

The Arena

ENTERING

It is advisable to get to the Arena early, especially if you are in the group and want to sit together. The seats are not numbered so it's first come, first serve. The entrance is usually on the side and you have to queue uphill. Snacks and drinks are served near the entrance inside the Arena.

WHAT TO WEAR

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the ground inside the Arena is dusty and gravelly. Avoid high heels or delicate footwear.

  • Evenings can be cool or windy, so it is a good idea to bring a light jacket or shawl.

  • In case of high humidity, you may want to pack freshening wipes and a small portable fan to stay comfortable.

  • A rain poncho is useful in the rare event of rain. Please avoid umbrellas, as they are not practical in a crowd and may block views.

  • Be mindful of others when choosing your outfit. Tall hats or large hairstyles can easily obstruct the view of people sitting behind you.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Bring a seat cushion or small towel to make the hard plastic chairs more comfortable, especially during longer screenings.

  • Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, or a thermos with a warm drink, which can be comforting on cooler evenings.

  • Bring quiet, easy-to-eat snacks, such as grapes, soft sandwiches or chocolate. Avoid food with strong odour, as it may be unpleasant for people seated nearby.

  • It’s a good idea to bring a plastic bag for your rubbish, so you can keep your area tidy and dispose of everything properly on your way out.

  • If you plan to use your phone for photos, translation or checking transport times, consider packing a power bank, as battery tends to run low quickly during long evenings.

  • Optional extras include a mosquito repellent to keep the little bloodsuckers away.

WHAT TO BE AWARE OF

The atmosphere at the Pula Film Festival is relaxed and informal, but there are a few things to be aware of that may differ from a typical indoor cinema experience.

  • Smoking and vaping are allowed in the Arena, as it is an open-air venue. If you are sensitive to smoke, consider sitting near the edges where there is more air flow.

  • People may talk or check their phones during the screening. While most guests are considerate, some light and noise is to be expected in such a large, outdoor setting.

  • Certain events may include strobe lighting or sudden sound effects, which could be uncomfortable for those with light or sound sensitivities.

  • If you choose to drive, be sure to remember exactly where you’ve parked. Make sure that you have paid enough for parking to cover the full duration of your stay, as screenings often run late.

ONCE THE SHOW IS OVER

The Arena can become crowded, especially at entry and exit points. If you are planning to take a taxi afterwards, be aware that finding one immediately near the Arena may be difficult. It often helps to book in advance or walk a short distance away from the main crowd to a quieter pickup point. You can also ask your host to recommend a reliable taxi company.
Make sure your Uber app is installed and working correctly, and that your phone is fully charged. You will also need mobile data or access to Wi-Fi to request a ride or contact your driver.
If you get separated from your group, it can be difficult to reconnect quickly in a large crowd. To avoid stress, agree on a clear meeting point in advance, and make sure everyone knows where to go if needed.

HELPFUL TOOLS TO STAY CONNECTED

  • Use Find My app on iPhones or equivalent apps on other phones.

Have a location sharing app such as Google Maps or What3Words

  • Attach Bluetooth trackers like AirTags or Tiles to bags or important items

  • Give children a card with your mobile number, or pin it inside their pocket

  • Install the What3Words app in advance. It lets you share or find precise locations using just three unique words, accurate to a 3-metre square, ideal for open spaces or large events and is especially useful in busy areas or locations with no clear address. It works even with weak GPS signals.

  • Google Plus Codes in Google Maps can also help pinpoint exact spots

  • What3Words is  and can help friends, family or taxis find you without confusion.

We hope this guide helps you feel more prepared and relaxed as you head out to enjoy the Pula Film Festival. It is truly a unique experience, watching films under the stars, surrounded by ancient stone and the energy of fellow cinema lovers. With a bit of planning and the right items in your bag, you can focus on what really matters: the film, the atmosphere, and the joy of being part of something special in the heart of Pula.
