7 Clever Travel Tips for a Smooth Journey to Istria in High Season

Planning a summer drive to Istria? You’re not alone. July and August weekends bring with them long queues at border crossings and slowdowns near the Učka tunnel. But with a little foresight and a few travel comforts, the journey can still feel like a rewarding part of your holiday.

Here are seven smart tips to help you arrive feeling relaxed and ready to explore.

1. Time Your Travel to Beat the Rush

If there’s one thing that makes a difference, it’s when you travel. Early morning or late evening departures tend to avoid the worst of the traffic (as early or late as possible, depending on your point of departure). The busiest times are late morning through early afternoon, especially at weekends.

The Istrian Y motorway, often referred to as the "Ipsilon", is where delays are most common. Border crossings such as Kaštel and Plovanija have seen queues stretch over 2 kilometres according to Istrian newspaper Glass Istre (Voice of Istria). A bit of timing strategy can save a great deal of stress.

2. Prepare for the Road Without Relying on Internet

This past weekend brought reports of significant tailbacks on the Istrian Y. It is a good reminder that mobile signal can be unreliable on stretches of motorway or in rural areas.

Before you set off:

  • Check the traffic information and weather

  • Explore scenic roads and border passes - if coming from Slovenia, consider a detour through Italy / cross Slovenian-Italian border and exit at Trieste-Muggia, then via Koper to Plovanija border crossing. Please note, the Slovenian motorway toll is paid by purchasing a vignette online or at petrol stations / Services for minimum 7 days. If you will explore Slovenia during your stay in Istria, it's well worth buying otherwise we suggest scenic routes.

  • Update your GPS, download offline maps or pack a paper map, just in case.

  • Install necessary apps that work without internet or print your itinerary

  • Ensure your car is in top condition (tyres, fluids, air conditioning, battery)

  • Save essential documents and booking details offline (take photos on your phone so that they are saved on cloud storage)

A bit of preparation now can mean a smoother journey later.

3. Use Smart Travel Apps for Navigation and Updates

Digital tools make travelling much easier, but they only work well if prepared in advance. Useful apps include:

  • Apps with maps, with offline maps saved GPS navigator for real-time traffic and route changes

  • Weather apps to monitor conditions

  • Car manufacturer apps for in-built navigation and diagnostics

Always download key data in advance. If you lose signal, your satnav or phone will still guide you.

4. Consider Scenic Routes instead of Tolled Motorways

Croatia’s motorways are tolled. They are usually the quickest option, but during high season they can become congested. An alternative is to take the scenic route through Istria’s interior or along the coast (although the coastal road can be busy in summer). These roads may take just as long, but they offer beautiful landscapes, historical towns, and a far more pleasant drive.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Sečovlje Salt Pans (Slovenia) – A peaceful detour near the border with walking trails and birdwatching

  • Buzet – A hilltop town famous for truffles and panoramic views

  • Hum – Known as the smallest city in the world

  • Motovun – A medieval gem renowned for truffles, wine and scenic vistas

  • Grožnjan – An artsy village filled with galleries and music

  • Roč – Steeped in Glagolitic history, connected to Hum by a poetic walkway

  • Pazin – Home to a dramatic gorge and castle, ideal for a short stop

  • River Mirna Valley - beautiful scenery, narrow valley alongside Mirna river (Mirna means "tranquil" or "quiet") flowing into the Adriatic sea at Antenal near Novigrad.

  • Lim Fjord - this is actually a 10km long estuary of river Pazinčica, but locals call it canal or 'fjord' and it's known for oysters, mussels, and, as rumours go, pirate caves.

  • Rovinj, Vodnjan, - beautiful medieval towns with labirinth of stony roads and lots of history

  • Opatijastretch your legs walking along the scenic 12-kilometre seaside promenade, and enjoy stunning views, historic villas, beaches, parks, and elegant resorts.

  • Plomin - an old town built on the ruins of original Roman houses, once a settlement inhabited by Illyrian Liburnians, with walls dating back to 9th century.

Choosing a slower route often brings more joy than sitting in traffic.

5. Take Breaks and Travel at Your Own Pace

Use motorway rest areas every two hours or so to stretch, hydrate and enjoy a short walk. Shaded picnic spots and café stops help keep everyone refreshed. There are many restaurants, "konoba's" and cafes along the road where you can stop for refreshments.

Let children and pets have a few minutes of movement. It improves the mood of the entire car.

6. Pack for Comfort and Heat

Summer in Croatia is hot, and traffic can mean sitting still in the sun. Pack smart to stay comfortable:

  • Cool box with water, juice, fresh fruit with high water content (watermelon, melon, pineaple, grapes, oranges, etc.)

  • Sunshades for windows and USB-powered fans

  • Thermos for tea or coffee

  • Power banks and chargers for devices

  • Hats, sun cream, long sleeves and sunglasses

Even short sun exposure can cause sunburn in the car. Plan ahead, especially for younger passengers.

7. Turn Downtime into AN ADVENTURE

A traffic jam does not need to ruin the day. Prepare a few easy comforts:

  • Downloaded music playlists or audiobooks, karaoke music to sing along

  • Travel games, colouring books or trivia cards

  • A notebook to jot down thoughts or impressions

  • Simple snacks and drinks within reach

  • Even waving to other cars or chatting with fellow travellers can make the wait more pleasant.

Bonus: Staying at Vintage Villa Magnolia in Pula?

After a day on the road, we aim to offer a welcome you’ll remember:
